Registering Your Domain Name

One of the first things you will have to do when embarking on the creation of an internet website is pick your domain name. This is the name by which you will be known online, and is the address you will put on your business cards.

Typically, you will be hoping to get a domain name that is something like www.businessname.co.uk. Sometimes these won't be available if other companies have already got there before - it's first come first served with good domain names.

If your first choice name has gone, you may need to consider www.business-name.co.uk, or take a different approach completely and pick a domain name that relates to what you do such www.plumbing-in-surrey.co.uk.

Co.uk or .Com

Internet addresses ending in co.uk and .com both imply companies or commercial ventures. co.uk does explicitly make it clear that you are a UK company, but .com is attractive as it's such a ubiquitous term. Our advice for a small company would be to go for the co.uk domain name, and maybe get a .com as well if available also, especially since the cost of registration has fallen a lot in recent years.

Domain names can be easily purchased through registrars such as GoDaddy or why not contact Your Own Website - we'll see what suitable names are available for you on your behalf.
